Choosing a freight forwarder for China–Australia shipping.
Under FOB terms, the forwarder is effectively your logistics department. Most importers spend less time choosing one than they spend choosing a courier for a birthday present.

What a forwarder actually does
A freight forwarder buys cargo space, consolidates shipments, produces and checks the documentation, coordinates with customs brokers, and troubleshoots the journey — port delays, rollovers, inspections. They don't own ships or planes; they orchestrate them. Which is why the good ones feel like a department and the bad ones feel like a booking website with a phone number nobody answers when the container goes quiet.
The questions that expose a good one
Ask about your actual lane and load: do they move China–Australia weekly, and in your mode — LCL consolidation for smaller loads, FCL for full containers, air when it's urgent? Who handles customs clearance on the Australian side, and is duty and GST handled through them or billed separately? What happens when a shipment misses its vessel — do you hear about it from them, or discover it in a tracking portal? Can they quote door-to-door with every charge itemised — origin fees, ocean or air leg, destination and port charges, delivery — so the quote can be compared against another forwarder's without archaeology? Vague answers to any of these are themselves the answer.
Forwarder and incoterm, matched
Your incoterm decides how much forwarder you need. Under FOB you appoint the forwarder and control the expensive legs — the arrangement that rewards choosing well. Under EXW your forwarder also runs the China-side pickup and export clearance, so their mainland capability matters more. Under DDP the seller's forwarder runs everything and yours is out of the picture — along with your visibility. Decide the term and the forwarder together, not in sequence.
The relationship compounds
Forwarding rewards loyalty more than shopping. A forwarder who knows your product, your cadence and your mode strategy quotes faster, warns earlier and fights harder in peak season than the cheapest stranger of the month. Compare quotes annually to keep everyone honest; switch for service failures, not for rounding errors.
